Now that's interesting! Five facts about Lead Year
Feb 28, 2024Do you know what a 'Leapling' is?
Well, I was curious about leap year and decided to do a little research. Here are five interesting facts you may not know.
- Not every four years is a leap year: While the general rule is a leap year every four years, there's a twist! Century years (ending in 00) are not leap years unless they are also divisible by 400. So, 2000 was a leap year, but 1900 wasn't.
- Leap year keeps our calendar in sync with the seasons: The Earth doesn't take exactly 365 days to orbit the sun, it takes about 365.24 days. This slight difference adds up over time, and the extra day in a leap year helps keep our calendar aligned with the seasons.
- There's a club for leap year babies: Around 4.1 million people worldwide are "Leaplings," born on February 29th. They even have their own international organization, the Honor Society of Leap Year Day Babies!
- Leap day traditions around the world: In Ireland, leap day is traditionally the one day women can propose marriage to men. Conversely, in some cultures like Greece, leap years are considered unlucky, especially for weddings.
- More than just one extra day: A leap year has 527,040 minutes, compared to the 525,600 minutes of a regular year. That's an extra 1,440 minutes – what will you do with yours?
Hope you enjoyed learning more about leap year.
